Insurance Quote 2012

Post by MikeB »

FYI: I just renewed the insurance on my L16A. The quotes came in at $218 (liability only) $429 (ground and liability) and $686 (full coverage including inflight). This appears to include a 10% discount for hangared. $500,000/100,000. I have the value of the L16 at $30,000 which might be a touch low but close enough. It looks like the insurance carrier will be Chatis Aerospace again.

Around 1050 hours and 350 tailwheel time. I'm on a private grass strip.

Broker was Aero insurance in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin. aeroins@wi.rr.com (Tom).

Always seems like he's kind of slow getting the quote back to me but that seems to be par for a lot of the brokers. Might just be the way the system works with aircraft insurance. Interesting thing: I have a friend who just finished another L16, is a CFI and has around 1500 hours with the same amount of TW time. Same airport. His quote was higher than mine for the same coverage. I've been with the same broker for probably 20 years with both my Champs and when I had my Cherokee (no claims) so that's the only way I can explain it.
Aircraft insurance business is hard to understand.

I just renewed my insurance and got the lowest rate ever. About half of last years. I have a 7EC valued at 25,000. For full coverage of hull with no deductible and $1,000,000 liability, passenger $100,000 liability. The total premium is $458.00.

As an attorney who works with aviation insurance companies every day, and as the husband of an aviation insurance broker, I can tell you that aviation insurance, at almost all levels, has seen drastic declines in premiums over the past couple of years. This is due mainly to the entrance of a few new underwriting insurance companies into the arena; not the magic of any broker.

And, all brokers get the same quotes from the companies - none is any cheaper or more expensive than any other broker. What matters is service - who will be there on Saturday afternoon if you have an accident? Who knows where to send your classic airplane for competent and quick repair? Those are the real questions to ask - service is the only real difference between brokers.

Years ago a Baron had a gear collapse on the runway at my FBO on a Sunday afternoon. The owner's broker wouldn't be bothered on Sunday afternoon to find out where to get a crane to pick it up and get it off the runway. I called my wife - we had the airplane off of the runway three hours later.

FYI I just paid my insurance for 2014 and my premium dropped from $688 to $658 or minus $30. This is for my L16/0200 with a value of $30,000, $500,000 liability and no deductable . Interesting that my broker furnished me two different quotes for the same insurance coverage with one at $658 and another at $947. I've been with the same broker and same insurance company for the past 20-25 years (no claims) so that may have been the factor rather than starting with a new company. Have thought about dropping the hull to 'not in motion' but at that price I'll keep it. Cheaper than insurance on my Ford pickup which is valued at less and has a $1000 deductible

My insurance also went down this year as it did last year. No claims and another 150 or so hours of Tailwheel time probably helped.
