ASI markings
ASI markings
I tried looking back and I don't see where anyone has asked this question. How is the 7AC airspeed indicator marked? Where does the green arc start and end? where does yellow start and end ? Where is red line? I know max level speed is 95 and red line is 129 but, where does green arc start? Is It at best climb or power off stall? Been dealing with this problem all winter and want it fixed for flying season. The old (junk) one had several ranges marked on both the glass and face. I want to do it right this time.

Re: ASI markings
Red line is obviously 129, if you wanted to put a yellow arc in there it would be from 95 to 129, and the green arc from 95 on down to the stall speed, whatever that is. My copy of TCDS doesn't list any stall speed for the 7AC, I do think I remember a stall speed listed somewhere as either 35 or 38.
The green arc doesn't have anything to do with climb speeds, only normal operating range.
On my ASI when I had it overhauled, I had them paint a single red line on it and that's all I'll ever have on it, because that was original. I don't believe they ever had green and yellow arcs from the factory.
For your plane, do whatever makes you happy.
I just found this for you,

Re: ASI markings
Are we sure that the original auto gauges (U.S. gauge or Stewart Warner) that were used were marked?? If not they are not in the TCDS they don't have to be - only the "red" line.
Re: ASI markings
I am interested in the same information, only as it applies to 11 AC's. Mine has what I believe to be the original ASI, which has only with a single red stripe for definition of Airspeed operating ranges. This is S/N 614. The Service manual (which is, of course B/W publication ) doesn't provide information such as this. My interest is not in what someone may have done to their Chief but rather how the 11 AC's were marked in production. One difference from standard information is that the M-6 stall warning system is included in the Aeronca drawings but obviously not included in the nominal production unit 11AC's. Also, anyone with information on the actual included equipment to each S/N'ed A/C
Please advise. I would be very interested in this.

Re: ASI markings
Dale,
What James did so well was take the numbers from the TCDS and color in the ranges.
For an 11AC those are
Level flight or climb 95 m.p.h. (83 knots)
Glide or dive 128 m.p.h. (111 knots)
So your red line would be at 128, a yellow arc extending from 128 down to 95, and a green arc from 95 to what airspeed your Chief stalls at. No white arc needed because you don't have any flaps on your Chief
I believe originally they simply had a red line.
