Re: A65 cylinders

Talked to Bill Pancake this morning and he said the WA crankcase baffles with the upper projection between the cylinders need to be trimmed off and the smaller baffles stay in place which answers my question. I remember doing a lot of trimming and fitting to get the baffling to fit right when I installed the 0200 in my L16 so I guess it's more of the same. Apparently the WA baffles are made for the A65 which is somewhat different. The C85 is closer to the 0200 which after thinking about it makes sense as they're listed in the same manual.

Mike,
Just a quick follow up on the cylinder. It was free of cracks but was at the maximum bore for a +.015 cylinder. I chose to locate another cylinder because it had a reverse choke in it. I don't know if the last rebuilder was trying a different approach to choke bore or if it was just that worn. I'll probably send it in and chrome it.
Thanks again for helping in finding a good cylinder.

Paul,
Interesting thing is that cylinder was on an engine I bought out east that was "rebuilt to zero time specifications". I could feel the cylinder was weak when I pulled the prop through but thought I would run it for a few hours. As it didn't get any better I just decided to replace it with one I had on the shelf with only a few hours on it and as I mentioned it appeared to have standard rings in the .015 over hole or maybe it was just worn that much but it had a h*** of a lot of ring gap. Anyway, good if you can at least have it chromed back to standard. I know A65 cylinders are getting hard to come by and it would be nice if Superior or ECI would start making them again.

Mike,
It was odd enough that the guys at Air West Engines called up to have me go look at it. They were startled to find the wear in such an odd pattern. These little cylinders typically don't wear in this manner and the problem could have been in the machining process.
I do know a guy that had ECI replace some cylinders on original heads. So they can save a cylinder if it requires a new bore. He ended up buying a rebuilt engine with Superior cylinders for hit Tcraft. He's modifing the baffeling to fit the cylinders, the heads are slightly larger in all diamentions.
Thanks again for the help with the cylinder.

We put a new set of Superiors on one of the A65's on our airport. Reading over the paperwork it states (If I remember correctly) "only replace with another Superior cylinder" or some words to that effect. Kind of hard if Superior is no longer making new A65 cylinders. I'm not sure what the difference is but I do know that the intake elbows are not the same as original Continentals or maybe there is a difference in the balance.

Mike,
It looks like they use O-200 heads on the smaller bores. They have the larger fin area at the exhaust and use the C-series elbows. That's where the Tcraft is having the problem. Their baffleing is a bit more of a stamping and held in place using 12" long "J" style rods, that don't fit in the fin spacing area. It turns into a pretty big project to get it right. We get a little spoiled with the Aeronca style baffles.
