So I've picked up quite a few LA4 magnetos for C-85s (counter-clockwise) and 1 AM4 (clockwise), intending to put on my A65 Aeronca Chief. But there doesn't seem to be a lot of information on these things, at least in Houston, Texas. The AM4 I picked up used and realized someone had already swapped parts over to make it shielded like the LA4, so I took my best parts out of 1 LA4 and moved them over. After doing so, I don't get sparks by manually turning the rotor (I did as an LA4). Does this mean my mag is bad / installed wrong? All I did was swap out the coil, condenser, and all parts aside from the rotor/bearings and the mag case itself.
Another question if anyone has tips on winding the impulse springs, I can't for the life of me physically wind that thing up enough to get the starter over the coupling. They have a winding device in the service manual but probably quit making those 60 years ago. Anyone have an easy trick? If not, does anyone know of a repair place that might have such a tool? I know these mags were used on tractors, not sure if I can locate a tractor repair shop or what in town here. Much appreciated.

You might have a left hand rotation mag. You need to change a few parts inside to make it change rotation direction.

I assume you have the service manual to work from.
A number of years ago I had one of my AM-4's rebuilt from Arn Air in Iowa. He used to advertise in Trade a Plane and I don't know if he's still around but I found this on the web.
