Post by John Parker »

Anyone ever dye a nylon seat belt kinda like Hooker harness sells ? I want to go from a maroon to a black. Maw use to dye our cloths with a Rit dye.

Any help appreciated to miss buying two new sets.

I have used vinyl paint {spray can type} in the past on fabric auto parts and it held up well and had a little shine so tey looked good to

Thank you Mr. Guest

I will try that . I found that the Rit dye will not soak in.

John,

I'm not a chemist but I think I would re-consider the idea of painting seat belts. What chemicals are in the paint and what will those chemicals do to the fibers of the belt material? Using paint on car fabric that isn't put under stress is not to my mind quite the same as putting it on something that you are perhaps expecting to save your life and will momentarily be put under extreme stress.

Without knowing for sure, I suspect that seat belts are not offered in a neutral color with various dyes to later match the airplane for exactly these reasons. I can almost guarentee that your local FSDO would never approve painting, or even dying, seatbelts.
