Shoulder Harness in 65C/CA
Has anyone put shoulder harness in their 65C/CA type Prewar aircraft--and it so what harness did you use? Is there an STC or PMA harness?

I think the EAA heaed this up with the feds a few years back. It is my understanding that you can install a shoulder harness in any of the aircraft that were certified originally without them with just a log book entry. The logic being that having an unapproved shoulder harness over no shoulder harness is a step in the right direction.
I have the parts and drawings to install a shoulder harness in a 7AC. I got everthing directly from the ACA factory in Rochester, WI. The price was reasonable and the parts and paper work provided me with approved data. I do not know if they could help with a per-war aircraft.

Grumps,
One of the really nice things about this new forum is that it allows for searching of past posts in our database. Go to the top of any page and the second icon on the second row is the search button. Click on it and it will then give you various options.
Options are searching by author, or subject. In this case type in "shoulder harness" and click start. It came up with many replies but in this case 3 of the hits had the subject of shoulder harness alone.
The two that may help you are these:

You can get a copy the FAA's "Issuance of Policy Statement, Methods of Approval of Retrofit Shoulder Harness Installations in Small Airplanes - ACE-00-23.561-01" on www.faa.gov. After reading this 16 page policy a few times, I'm pretty sure it allows you to install retrofit harnesses as a minor change (log book entry only) in front and rear seats of small airplanes manufactured before July 19, 1978. One thing this document does do a good job of is spelling out and referencing many of the specifications involved in designing and installing a good shoulder harness system. Any owner/IA should be able to read thru this and design/install a good shoulder harness system in a Champ of Cheif with just a simple log book entry.
