I know this has been covered in previous post but I'd like to ask those veterans of the Aeronca world a few questions, I've recently purchased a 51 Champ
7 EC with the no bounce gear, my CFI has a 7AC with standard oleos, if you rock his plane by the wingtip it actually rocks back and forth and you can visually see each gear compressing and extending. When you rock the 7EC with no bounce there is no compression or extension visible on either side, is this normal for the NB? Are they stuck? One of the older post on this site mentioned you couldn't expect the NB to rock as the standard landing gear does
because of it sitting on the stiff taxi springs but needed to ask those of you who know. My first flight was Sunday and as we did our preflight my CFI suggested we grease the gear which we did and they did look dry on the part that was exposed, I put about 10 strokes with a hand gun in each side, I was reluctant to put more in for fear of filling the upper cavity which I knew would be a bad thing , learned that from previous posters. Sitting in the hanger I've got 2 inches of strut exposed on the right and 1.75 on the left, after some in air work and 3 TO & Landings there is a slight amount of grease showing on the exposed portion of the gear. So I repeat my questions are these the normal characteristics of the NB? Are they stuck? If they aren't stuck and don't require disassembly should I manually apply grease to the exposed portion of the gear? Also my tires have 25 lbs of air in them, my CFI suggested 20 lbs.
I appreciate some guidance here and thanks to you all in advance Randy

Re: No or less bounce landing gear
Randy,
Sounds pretty normal for the no bounce gear. Their taxi spring is stiff and some have a Bellville washer set-up that was the "high energy" springs. You may have over greased the oleo and will see some grease shooting out the bottom. If they are noisy during taxi or landing they may need to be serviced. Clean and lube the exposed area of the gear and go out and enjoy your new Champion.

Randy-
Grease required is only one or two strokes. The rest will appear out the end on successive landings.
Here is a good article on oleos
http://johnpropst.yolasite.com/resource ... v%2010.pdf
And another article
http://johnpropst.yolasite.com/resource ... ev%200.pdf
The Aeronca lands on the oil and taxis on the spring. The no-bounce gear is very specific as to the amount of oil it needs. Standard gear you simply fill to the top. The easiest way to fill is with a turkey baster found at Walmart. A suitable fluid to use is John Deere Hydra-guard.
