3D printed winter cowl cover
3D printed winter cowl cover
Decided to think of a creative way to block the small inlet below the prop. Created the solid model and had it SLS 3D printed out of Nylon 12. Going to place some rubber strip on the back side edge and mount this weekend. Here are some pics. I had another one printed from Nylon 12 CF (30% Carbon fiber) however the original design didn't fit.... Costly mistake on my end.
Re: 3D printed winter cowl cover
I like that, take some pictures of the install and how it mounts.
Re: 3D printed winter cowl cover
that is cool.
what are the ridges on the backside for?

Re: 3D printed winter cowl cover
Ridges are to keep the cover within the opening. This is based on the print 3-640. I found designed to that print the cover didnt fit my cowl.
Ill have some pictures from mounting this weekend.

Are you sharing the print file? Selling these units?

Re: 3D printed winter cowl cover
Not yet Bob. I'll share the CAD file when I finish the design. Once mounted I'll look at any changes I would make then share everything. If I could get a cowl not on a plane I would like to design covers for all the inlets for winter ops.
If I had a 3D printer or was still in a CNC environment I would think of producing these, but for now I'll just have the CAD to share.
Re: 3D printed winter cowl cover
Thanks for the info. I am finally thinking about buying a 3D Printer now that they have developed as much as they have and the prices have started to come down.

Re: 3D printed winter cowl cover
I will say, not all printers are created equal. Whomever printed my covers via a SLS printer had a very nice setup. Excellent quality.
Re: 3D printed winter cowl cover
Mounted.
I used the mounting setup directly from the print. (I'll share when I get home Incase someone doesn't have it). Flew for 2 hours, no issues.

Re: 3D printed winter cowl cover
Im unable to produce them, but I can share the files. I have a STEP and a parasolid file I can share. They might be too big to post on here or incorrect format. Other than that, I used the 3-640 Aeronca drawing for the holding hardware. I used monadnock clip nuts with locking nuts and 1" 8-32 screws
