Are the Snap Rings Required for C85 Pushrod Sockets?

Post by jimboe »

I’m helping my IA install the Real Gasket Pushrod Seal Kit in my C85 and noticed there aren’t any of the snap rings installed to retain the pushrod sockets.

My IA is out of the country on vacation for a couple weeks and I can’t reach him.

Are those snap rings required? I read the A65 doesn’t have them.

Thanks.

I don't see any snap rings in the parts catalog and not quite sure what you are looking for but I don't recall any snap rings in tappet body, hydraulic unit, cup, or pushrod chain.

Thanks for the reply, Richard. I didn't see it until a couple days ago. I went ahead and ordered the snap rings and waited for my A&P/IA to get back from vacation then put them in.

The 065 engine doesn't have them, but the C-85 does. They keep the pushrod sockets from falling on the floor when you remove the pushrods.

I tried to attach a photo of the Camshaft Assembly page of the parts book, page 2-11, but couldn't because the file was too big. If you have access to a C-85 parts book, the snap rings are item #4 on the list of that page. The p/n is 530940. They are one of the few affordable parts Continental makes!

Some do and some don't. It is the same part number for A-65.

But they are a good idea - when pulling a push rod out, you might suck the little aluminum seat out of the lifter. When you re-assemble, it will not run well and may damage the lifter. The snap rings prevent that.

Check your lifter bodies - if they do not have a tiny groove, then the snap rings won't snap in. You do not want them rattling around in there.
