It appears I will have to replace at least one spar on the L16 I just bought (kind of anticipated it). While my AI hasn't had a chance to look at it yet, I can see what looks like a longitudinal crack around four inches long running from a nail hole and outboard from the reinforcement plate for the strut attach point. According to 43.13, the spar can't be spliced that close to the reinforcement plate. The 'crack' shows up on both sides of the spar so I'm pretty sure it's a "crack'

(and I can wiggle it with a adjustable wrench......crude, but works). Not sure how much help my AI will be as he mostly works on spam cans. There is a older fellow like myself about 40 miles up the road who has rebuilt a number of Cubs, Champs, Chiefs, including spar replacement. But like me, he lacks the license. Anyone with wood, tube and fabric experience is getting hard to find in this day and age.
Well, I wanted another project and I got one

!! Be interested in any suggestions or helpful hints on spar replacement. I'll most likely be replacing with wood spars $$$$$ from WAG as I can drive down and trailer them back (about 250 miles).
Thanks,
Mike
