Hand held Radio noise interference

Started using a Icom A23 Handheld in the L-16 and experiencing alot of noise interference. Looking for input and wondering what type of Portable intercom and radio setups other people might be having good luck with?

Has anyone tried the mag and or alternator filters I see Spruce, wag and others sell?

This is a C85-12 so it does have an electrical system.

What type of mags and harness does the plane have? This in many cases is what is causing the difference and not anything to do with the electrical system on the engine.

Have you tried to turn the generator off and see if there is any difference?

You need mag filters, shielded harness and resistor spark plugs, i.e. REM40E, etc. If you have alternator (?) you need filter. An exrternal antenna also makes for better receive and transmit.

Note you have generator--have you checked the brushes?

We have not tried turning the generator off yet, hope to get a chance to do that this weekend. Plugs are REM40E, sheilded harness, with external antanae, Radio runs on its own powerpack and is plugged into a 9 volt battery operated intercom system. Going to try the mag filters.. any tips on installing these?

Low and slow: In order to fix something it's good to know what kind of noise you have, ingition static , whine, or the natural squeeling (side tone) of the Icom when transmitting.
I'm using the Icom A5 and it's great. It will not transmit through the intercom unless the pilot isolate switch is on. When cruising there is a squeely side tone added to my voice which I hear in the headset. Takes a while to get use to this. My transmission is crystal clear to anybody listening on the other end however.

Update:

Added magneto filters and the noise that was being experienced has pretty much cleared up.

Jon,

I am considering putting the mag filters on my 7AC w/A-65 and eisemann mags.

I see in the catalog that there is a bracket on the filters. Can you tell me how hard/easy it was to install and whether that bracket is attached to an existing bolt? Also is the wiring straightforward?

The installation was very straight forward. The bracket that is shown just bolts to the back of the magneto utilizing existing bolts. There were instructions that came with that were easy to follow.

Please see my post in this same area. Aren't all these filters you describe so you can hear better? I hear perfectly but noone can hear me more than half the time, sometimes they say they hear me well, making me nuts!! Thanks.

it could be the mic or the position of the mic relative to your mouth. if my mic isn't exactly positioned correctly i have the same problem transmiting, voice to voice intercom, and wind noise. if it's 10 -20 degress off of vertical the noise canceling feature doesn't work. i have an icom a-4, telex 100 headset , itc-401-i-enri flighttech intercom and shielded plugs bernie

I'd try the filters on the mags first (cheap try). I have a JRC520 handheld, A65 with Slick, shielded harness and plugs. The antenna is mounted on the left wing fairing, but having the 'ducky' hooked up works just about as well and static free. I can pick up the local AWOS from 20 miles away and even talked (air to air) to other aircraft 40 miles away. One of the other Champs doesn't have shielded harness/mags and it's very noisy with lots of background noise both transmitting and recieving. Good for a couple of miles when you can hear it.

I guess there are those who have had success with unshielded harness, but that hasn't been our experience for whatever it's worth.

Thanks, since my reception is truly crystal clear and tower complains very specifically of a lot of wind and engine noise. I wonder if my mike on my AVCOMM headset is to far from my mouth at times or if it needs a sponge or other shield over it as it is "naked".
If not then the shielding is next!

Hi Doc, I would try setting the mic close, I have an old DC and I always have the mic touching my lips, in my Champ with shielded ignition but no elctrical connection yet the radio is crystal clear, the foam may also help I've never used a mic with the foam but lots of folks do.
