Need parts for wheel

Post by WWhunter »

I just disassembled my wheels to pack the bearings and found that the inner shoulder (A39021) is broken and it is also missing the felt washer and the other washer (A39070) is very badly bent. Does anyone know where I can get replacement parts. These are the Van Sickle brake and wheel assy. The part numbers were taken fron the Aeronca service manual.

Also, is there suppose to be some type of small piece of steel on the part of the brake shoe other than the imbedded piece that rides against the cam for the brakes? There was a piece on on of the shoes. The linings are like new and it seems that the cam has to move a lot for the brakes to make contact with the drum.

Thanks,
Keith

Howdy Keith,

There are a couple people on Barnstormers with wheel parts. Look under "Aeronca" in the "Antique/Classic" section. There's was a guy named Lee Ballard down in south Georgia that had a bunch of champ wheels, but I didn't see any of his ads. If need, I may have his number around here somewhere.

As for the notch on the brake shoe....

I think the idea is to put something softer than aluminum in that notch so the cam isn't worn out of profile. I haven't seen any data on it, but I attached a Micarta block in the notch with epoxy, and use a sander to get the width correct. It's kind of hard to explain with out pictures or talking in person.

Here's the Phenolic Block at Aircraft Spruce.... Click Here You really don't need much, 2 pieces about 1/4X1/4 inch... come to think of it, I've got some at the shop if you want.

And feel free to give me a call if you need anymore info. Or shoot me an email.

I have set of wheels and good year brakes that were just removed from my L-16- If anyone is interested in these, they are going to be going for sale soon.

What are a set of wheels with Goodyear brakes worth? Not sure how much to ask... Was thinking about placing them on E-bay, but would rather sell them to somone from this site.

Jon,

A lot depends on condition and what all is included.

I was at Middletown and bought 2.5 Goodyear main wheels (two complete and one half) for $15! Usually on Ebay they go for $30-$40 a wheel without brakes so if yours are in good shape would figure a minimum of $100 if everything was included and in good shape. If the clips and brakes are in good condition then this would go higher, possibly a lot higher.

I have seen two main wheels go for around $150 but they were supposedly sitting in someone's hangar since 1950 or so. No proof and it was on Ebay so VMMV here.

One factor here is the weight rating of the wheels. Look on the outside rim and it should say either 1000, 1200 or 1500 pound rating. The higher rated the wheels usually bring a few extra bucks but these were also usually used on an Aeronca Sedan, Stinson 108 or Cessna 170.

See what you have and get back to us. Will try to get some info worked up for you as well.

Thanks guys. But it isn't really the wheel I need. It is the spacer (inner shoulder) and a brake shoe I am looking for. I have one broken brake shoe after closer examination. The little piece of metal I stated earlier was installed because of the insert on the end of the brake shoe was broken off.

Nathan,
Your comment was funny because I know who Lee Ballard is. I lived in Grovetown, Ga while we were station at Ft. Gordon and have been to his hangar in SC. He is a very nice guy. I was a member of EAA chapter 172 at Pea patch near Blythe, Ga. Its a small world.

I called Buzz Wagner but I had a little hard time understanding him so I may have to go over there and see if I can find what I need.
