Here’s the question: Can you swap parts from different aircraft if they are on the same TCDS? And if so, is a logbook entry good enough? For example; the 7 series Aeronca has the same TCDS from the 7AC Champ through the 7KCAB Decathlon. So could I take the balanced tail from a Decathlon and put it on a Champ?

I have wondered that for a while. The 11CC Chief has balanced tail feathers and always wondered if I could just change them out for the ones on my 11BC.

Good question...

Nathan,

Do you know anyone in the ATL area with an L-3 Aeronca? Thats the wartime Aeronca. Have a guy interested in buying a L-3 or a Champ and was curious what the difference was between the two.

Actually I think my neighbor has a basket case in his hangar.

I think there's a lot of difference in the L-3 and all the other Aeronca's. Like you fly it from the back, and the fuel is in the center section(?). I know the ribs are like no other Aeronca (7 or 11 series). Never gotten to fly one, but they look real cool.

I think there were a couple at the NAA fly-in this year.

Joe and Nathan,

As I recall, the L-3's have wood ribs and spars, no spar AD's, and the fuselage is rectangular in cross-section. Fuel is in an overhead tank feeding into a small header tank fwd. of the panel.

The L-3's are slower. External controls and cables for ailerons like the J-3. In fact, they are a lot like a J-3. They have wood ribs, the fuel tank is right above your head, fly from the rear, non counterbalanced rudder. Totally different animal than the champ.

In answer to Nathans question - no, you can't unless the part number for the part as designated in the applicable part manuals for the specific model in the TCDS are the same.
