Price of Scott 3200 Tail Wheel /Mar 1955

Post by Mnflyer »

Hey Guys while looking thur my office library for a manual I came across a Mar 1955 Van Dusen Aircraft Supplies Catalog. An the retail price of a Scott 3200 tailwheel was $77.50 plus shipping. :D :)
How about that for the good old days

The first ground loop (with dinged wingtip or possible cracked spar) its worth every penny IMHO.

Are you saying that the Maule tail wheel causes the aircraft to ground loop??

I have one on may champ for 37 years and give dual for tailwheel checkout
and no ground loops to date but if one ever does happen I will tell the FAA that it was the Maule and also the insurance co.

The scott is a better built tailwheel but with a good inspection / service at annual the maule will do a great job.

Joe I forgot I have a champ and it was built to fly, not sure about those Chiefs. Ha Ha?

Joe-

If any tail wheel is improperly maintained it might cause a ground loop--ground loops usually don't come from tail wheels they usually come from pilot technique--you know the saying "fly a taildragger until you shut off the engine and it is chocked." So then is a non swivel better than a swivel? Or is one pilot better or luckier thatn another pilot?
I have flown many aircraft with Maules and Scott's and personally couldn't tell the difference (only the price). But I have seen a number of Maules installed improperly and don't know why the springs hadn't fallen off.

Believe that the Maule's are less forgiving of weak springs or not aligned correctly. I just know that my airplane with a 3200 on it has had no problems and I hear of a lot of other owners with other tailwheels having issues.

Would rather spend a pretty penny at the beginning and never have any problems than fiddle with it for a long time getting it right.

Joe

Do you have a 3200 on your airplane--an 8 inch? And not a hard rubber 2000?

Doug,

Have had a 3200 on every Aeronca that I owned. Believe that its an 8 inch pressure type tire, not hard tire.
