Chief Baggage Compartment

It looks like I am missing part of my Chief. I ordered the Airtex baggage compartment for my Chief. It is the one with snaps all around the opening. I cant figure out what it connects to just aft of the seat. There must be a bar or some type of support for the forward edge og the baggage compartment. If someone can describe whats missing from my projest, that surw would help me move along. The baggage compartment has a series of female snaps along the front edge.

hi.. I know the frustration of not being able to "see" how things go.. whats worse is when you do figure it out, its generally simple. I have a chief that I finished a few years back. My baggage was from airtex also. If you want to change the color, mine was an ugly white, you can use rit dye and give it a little color. The fabric wraps around the upper seat post and you use cord to go around the post and into the snap holes. If you need any more help along the way please let me know. I spent 4 years rebuilding and half of that time figuring out how "things" go. 218-213-6030 -my name is john and I live in Duluth MN.

oops- the fabric does not go around the post, just up to it and then use cord that goes around the tube and into the snap holes. I should read my posts before i send them--sorry

Not anywhere near the plane now but believe that mine wraps around part of the seat on the forward area... Have not messed with it in a while and somewhat forget but that is what sticks in my memory.

Mine has a piece of 1x2" that is mounted across the front of the deck for the baggage compartment. It is mounted on the bottom side (front) of the deck. It runs along the back of the seat. The snaps are on the rear side of the 1x2 and the front side of the baggage compartment canvas snaps to it.

Once again, I am really confused. Since I did not have the pleasure of taking this airplane apart, putting it together again becomes quite a challenge. One owner says to lace it to the back of the front seat, while another says to mount snaps on a 1X2 and secure it that way. Someone please be a tie breaker and let me know how the factory did this. If it were a J-3 I would know the answer, but this is my first Chief restoration. Thanks...

Not sure how the factory did it. The post war seats were adjustable before the AD came out, so can't see it mounted to the seat frame. Like you, I did not take mine apart. I know it was restored in the late 70's, so I don't know if it was redone original or not. I assume that since airtec put snaps on the front side, this is how it is done. (1x2) Of course, I am wrong a lot. I will try to find the correct way for you.
