The stick Chiefs were built to compete in the Pre WWII CPT (civilian pilot training ) program run by the U.S colleges and universities. My records show that 78 were built. They did not make the cut --the J-3, Aeronca and Taylorcraft tandems did.

The stick Chief is a fun airplane to fly--the best way to fly it is to go solo (sit on left) and use left foot on left rudder pedal and place right foot on right rudder pedal on right side of aircraft. This is especially true if you need to use alot of aileron. You must remember when these were designed and built the average pilot was 5'8" to 10" , had a shoe size from 7 to 8 1/2 and weighed no more than 165 pounds--usually 145 to 155 pounds. It was a fun airplane to take your girl friend in, especially if she was wearing a skirt . I took my wife for a ride in 1953 and I think her dad was a little upset. But it worked we still fly 52 years later.

Because of vitamins and better (?) eating habits Cessna had to widen the 182 four inches in the early 1960's. They left the 172 narrow at the time because most folks flying them couldn't afford to fly and eat in the same week.
