I would seal the frames up with something after it's all together for water protection, I'm going to use epoxy varnish myself.

I should add that the plywood has to be plywood, the other pieces could be any other kind of wood you care to use.
You could use oak or birds eye maple or anything for the arm rest and finish it like fine furniture, or you could use pine for the arm rest and paint it.
