Last I heard they were for experimental only, but have seen them used on several normal airplanes. Problem is either when the IA comes to do the annual will they pass or if there is an accident/incident will the insurance company pay.

Just use a certified clamp or shroud, and call it an owner produced part. I know an owner can reproduce an entire fuselage, and reuse one small tube, and its legal. So, what's the difference in this ?

You are correct if its done that way. One small problem is that I believe that Sonny's exhaust systems use stainless and thats not what is called for on the original Aeronca blueprint.

Service Helps & Hints #25 gives you the part number of the Stainless Y stacks, 7-485S and 7-486S. Shouldn't be an issue installing them as an owner produced part.
