I actually have a recording at home back in Ponca City, Oklahoma of AWOS "260 at 48, gust 81".

That was another piece of good information and something I forgot to mention. When someone calls in and asks for the active runway, we tell them that the wind CURRENTLY is favoring XX, but that they should check the wind sock when closer. Since we are a local airport with multiple runways and a lot of older Tube and Fabric Planes, many do not have radios and the pilots must rely on the old tested and trusted method of looking, seeing and adjusting.

I think if the wind was gusting to 88 that would pretty much take care of everything on the field. Nathan, thanks for the info. Always interested on how other clubs handle the situation. In our case, insurance at $1500 would be out of the question as (if I remember correctly) proceeds from this year were only about $1400 and cleared $850 after expenses. Obviously, ours is a pretty small event but I'm always relieved when it's over. We only run from 8-12 noon so the time frame is reduced, of course.

I usually run the radio as advisories only but this year I had 5 in the landing pattern that needed to taxi back so I had to hold a couple out until I got the runway cleared. We have no 'taxiway' so everyone had to back taxi depending on the which way the wind is from. This year the wind kept switching from SE to SW which kept things 'exciting'. I'd say those who have been flying in have been really good about doing things right, though, the biggest problem being the radio frequency (122.9) is not listed on the sectional for whatever reason.
