Taper-shaft Ratchet Wheel Needed
Re: Taper-shaft Ratchet Wheel Needed
The other thing that needs to be made (have never found ANY used) are the plates that mount to the front of the engine that the starter assy bolts to.

Re: Taper-shaft Ratchet Wheel Needed
Joe,
I made up a bunch of the starter attach brackets for the A series, and still have the tooling to make more. Same with the pulley brackets. The A series are different from the C series brackets, both the starter mount and pulley brackets.
There should be a half dozen brackets I made floating around somewhere. Jay Spenser up in MI installad them and I got positive feedback from him. He has since removed it due to servicing the starter. If you fly from dirt don't install one, it takes half the day to clean it.
If we need to make some more, I have hard tooled to make them.

Paul,
I never heard of this problem before. What exactly is the problem ? Could it be solved with compressed air or some regular maintenance procedure that doesn't take a half-day ?

Re: Taper-shaft Ratchet Wheel Needed
It tends to get oil inside and the dirt is attracted like a magnet. Then you have to remove the starter, disassemble, clean and install. Not hard just takes time. Most guys don't keep them clean and they malfunction and break stuff.

Paul,
Thanks for the input. I ask for all Chief users who have had this problem to respond to this thread if they feel they have had this problem with their McDowell's giving as much detail as possible. Especially if they have discontinued use of the starter due to it.
Please also see my next post on this thread.

I am trying to compile a list of resources for McDowell parts for this thread. You said you still have the tooling for the starter attach brackets and pulley brackets for the "A" series. Would you be willing to accept an order/request to manufacture sets of these parts in quantities of 1, 5 or 10 each manufactured in strict compliance with the original Aeronca drawings for them? If there need to be waivers for materials, heat treatment or other, please indicate what they are. Please advise cost, delivery and terms of payment which you would require. Let's assume shipping to CONUS locations by the most cost efficient means w/i UPS/FEDEX/USPS.
My personal thanks for your participation.
