McDowell starter parts

The ratchet wheel shown is a flanged shaft unit. The holes in the wheel should be large enough to fit over the drive lugs on the crank. The taper shaft wheel has a 1/8th offset and 3/8 in bolt holes. The prop on a flange shaft engine is about 1 1/2 in forward of the taper shaft engines.

Sharpen up your pencil, because if the costs go above a basketball team of Ben Franklins it might be a tough sell. I'm hard tooled for the brackets should you need them.

Paul,

To have the ratchet wheel stamped will cost more than a NBA basketball team salaries. Tooling alone for a short run of parts is over "$3000.00". Spinning will be the most cost effective means of manufacture for the blank part then EDM the gear section.

It would be great to use the parts that you have tooled up for. Anything else you might want to look into for parts?

The ratchet pawl wears out, this would need machining, if somebody local has a EDM it would be a simple cut. Bill Pancake has in the past built the springs for the starter. He could offer some advise on building it.
Any time I've gone looking for a starter I found one. I don't know if you could sell many new ones.

Hello guys Im a newbe just joined last week. Ive been reading your forums for about a year.Very helpful. I'm a retired tool&die maker Worked for myself last 20yrs .finely just shut shop down an retired. AN decited to do what ive always wanted. Restore old Aeroncas, curently finishing up my old 7ac . Should be ready for spring flyins .Have 2 more in hangar to do next. L16 an another 7ac in parts. Anyway I have managed to aquired a nose bowl for a chief that had a mcdowell starter on it .I have no use for it. Any one need it just whistle. J.D.holbrook WARSAW IN.

I am in the process of fabricating station bucks to shape a couple nose bowls. Have a pattern bowl, would like another to compare. Do you have any pictures of the nose bowl?

I have a couple of Chief nosebowls. One is about a 90% version with some repairs but in good to VG condition.
