Making new spars for a 7BCM
Hey Joe,
(wasn't that a song?) Your included......
I have decided (with your permission) to go ahead and do a thread on "building a 7 BCM wing" and "covering a 7BCM wing" but, remember, I will be learning as I go and if I don't find an answer locally, I will be looking for answers from the group.
I thought Nathan would be doing his but, I understand he's got to catch up on some customers work first.
Nathan, remember all work and no play
...........see you guys!

Tim,
The problem with Nathan is that once he gets close to any power tools, it could be interesting, so we all stand back and just watch. He chimes in from time to time so at least he is out of the Emergency Room now.
Pls go ahead and do the threads that you mentioned above. Its a good thing to have pictures of how to do it. Any questions we will be glad to help.

I screwed a couple of 2X4 to my saw horses and drilled holes part way in to recieve the all threads. " All set for varnishing".

I mixed the EV-400 as per the direction for brushing.
Nathan, was right on with his recommended procedure. I was trying to figure out how much it would take to coat the spars and not have to much left to throw away.
So, I decided to try 16 oz. Based on mixing instruction, 2 parts varnish to 1 part catalyst and thin to 50/50 I used 5 1/2 oz. varnish to 2 3/4 oz. catalyst to 8 oz. of thinner (close enough for goverment work) FAA, I'm just kidding. Anyway 16 1/4 oz's was just enough to do all 4 spars, had maybe a few brush fulls left.

I started at the butt end and worked towards the tip, then came back and put another coat on the end grain of the butt.

Next few coat will be sprayed, I have to wait until I recieve the new HVLP gravity feed with the 1.4 tip I ordered, should be here in a day or 2.
Just a quick note, If any of your old phenolic bushing were a bit loose, after you varnish they won't be, While varnishing, I made sure to get a coat down in the holes (sealing from any moisture), when I tried the bushing in today they were snug (nice fit).
Also, the EV-400 covered very well and sanded real nice, should end up with a nice finish after I spray a couple coats.

Hi Joe,
I just had to take a break and take care of my dogs illness (my best companion), I think we have the seizures under control now so, I will be getting back to the wings soon, hopefully in about a week.
I did get the final coats of varnish done about a week ago and getting ready for rib layout, I will start posting photos soon. Thanks for checking on me.

Tim and Tater(Nate): When you guys use the drag wire jig, be sure and assemble the wing compression members and check the fit of all the wires. I am having to go back and disassemble and open the holes up a little. I don't know what is going on. You can bolt this tool up to an original spar and the holes line up. I did not want you all to have to take apart a bunch of stuff like me! Let me know how it goes. David J.
