air filter

what air filter should I use on the 85-12 on my champ? Whats better, paper or foam. What do the rest of you use. How often do you change it? Where is the best place and (quick) to get it? THANKS! Jim Pacquin

Jim,
If you have the stock airbox I would use the paper filter available from Univair. If a 150 style airbox is installed I would use a Bracket air filter assembly.

The Paper ones are nice because you don't have to replace them... in theory at least. Just flip them upside-down and bang them on the floor makes it good as new.

Plus the old airbox (paper style) fits the nosebowl much nicer and tighter than a bracket style.

But on the flip side; if I was operating in real dusty conditions, the Bracket Filter would probably be a better choice.

Just my opinion.

Years ago Brackett would "share" a copy of a 337 for converting the metal paper filter frame to accept a Brackett 4108 filter. They even used to sell a parts kit.

If you could get your hands on the front grill and rear screen material it produces a nice unit. Does require a field approval, however.

For what it's worth, Brackett does not have a STC'd filter unit for the Champ. Those using C150 types are in many cases doing so without the FAA's blessing.

thanks for your input. I'd say the flying conditions in western n.y. are pretty normal. I fly only into grass strips, very little dust. I plan to annual the champ next week and replace the filter. It doesn't look like the 140 cessna set up as the champ has no screws on the filter frame like the 140 had. (please remember my mechanical abilitys are sharpening lawnmore blades and installing an occasional spark plug.) Is once a year enough?

Not quite sure what you're asking about.

Are you talking about replacing the paper filter every year? If so, thats not neccessary, simply clean it out by blowing air from back-to-front, and bang it on the floor so all the crap falls out.

If talking about how often it needs to be cleaned out; then yeah, once a year is good enough.

I have the Airmaze foam filter and like it very well. Just dip in in some gas, blow it out and all set to go again.

bracket has a filter element that fits the paper filter box, but no stc. you'll need to disassemble the box and get approval via 337 or just do it and be quiet. did i say that ? bernie

I did a 'informal' survey of the Champs and Chiefs at Oshkosh last year.
It appears that about 50% had the Airmaze and the other 50% had the Brackett type.
But you're right....there is no STC for the Brackett on the 7AC and 11AC type.
