I would like to know if anyone has any suggestions on converting my clevlend dmb wheels to something better or without the AD.
Does Clevland still make this wheel or a newer/ better soultion?
I have this on a 1946 7ac with an L16 conversion in Fl.

I have a crack in one wheel and I am looking for a replacement or a soultion to convert to something better.

Any suggestions or help would be great.

Ki, You might find someone with some spare wheels, but they are hard to come by.

I ordered new cleveland wheels and hydraulic disc brakes from Safe Air Repair. They're pricey at over $2K, but they eliminate a lot of the problems associated with maintaining the older wheels.

Believe that there is a long wait for these new wheels from SAF, so if you are interested in them, plan WAY ahead!

well I have a crack now so I guess I better start looking fir a replacement and then get my name on the list for later. I visited the website but it does not mention the conversion. I will call them on Monday.
Any suggestions on where to find a used wheel?

You might try asking at the Luscome web pages. I think they have the same wheel as a champ.

As for the hold-up at SAR, that is coming from Cleveland, not Dan and Joe.

SAR has a couple different listing for brake kits but i'm not sure which is which. First SAR number is SAR4-1662-AC @ $2552 and the other is SAR8 @ $1419

They are well worth it as others have said. a neighbor has clevelands on his firebreathing O-200 champ and they are nice clean installation.

You might use the wheels from a TriPacer. (PIPER). They are Hyd. brakes but the wheels carry no AD and you can use the drums too. A
lot of pacer planes are going to the late disc type.

Okay guys, I have a solution.
Safe Air does have the conversion but is waiting on Clevland.
Seems like about a 4 month wait. Joe faxed me a breakdown of the wheel I am having trouble with and I was able to call univair to get a wheel.
The new wheel is $1100 per wheel which will take 4 months to get.
Of course at that price it would be good to get the conversion for the extra $100 you get new brakes thrown in.
I called Cleveland and they said that if I replace the wheel the AD goes away. I called univair back and asked if they had the inner, outer, and brake drum in stock and the guy said sure we do. Yikes, just a guy that can read numbers but no logic eh?
So if I replace the inner and outer on both wheels the AD goes away because the new parts are past the AD and of course available at a fine retailer near you..
I will now break the wheel down and get the new parts.

Lowell is correct. The Piper tripacer wheel has the same type certificate number as the champ wheel but the Piper wheel is rated at 1500# rather than the Champs 1000# rating. A direct swap but no AD. Use your Champ brakes on the Piper wheel.

Before buying, verify that BOTH wheels have "TCN 134" and a rating of "1500#" stamped on the outer wheel half. A while back, I bought two wheels off ebay from an Earl Allen of California who advertised and verified by email that the wheels were "TCN134" and #1500. Only one, however, fit the description. So look closely. The 1500# wheel also comes on a Stinson.

Which half do you need? inter - outer might have one. you can buy or rent till you get the newer style.

You can buy the wheels or halves at Univair.

I ordered two halves from univair and they sent me the wrong piece for the inside. The part number was incorrect and when I took the wheel off it did not match as well. They say about a 4 month wait on the inner part with the drum. The guys on the phone really are clueless...
I called the guy from short wing piper and he said he sold them for $175.
Someone got a good deal.
If anyone had a 1500 pond wheel with a drum style brake.. feel free to contact me.
as well I am open to any other suggestions.
