fuel gauge gasket

Hi again...have a minor fuel gauge leak when the tanks is full.
took it apart today an found that the PO had placed three paper thin gaskets on the assembly. One on the back portion of the flange and two on the front part. As bad as it sounds it actually held for quite some time.
So the question is:
"what is the proper type gasket and thickness that is supposed to be on
the gauge assembly? are there two or three...cork, rubber, neoprene?"
appreciate the feedback...........
Cheers!!!!!
