You'll talk with Valerie

In talking with my brother I learned a few things about insurance. If you call a carrier; AIG, Avemco etc... and start fishing for quotes, they will always be higher, than if you go through a reputable broker. When you call a carrier directly, your information in put into the system they can all see you fishing and give roughly the same quote. But if you go through a Broker, they have the ability to fish for policies without giving out too much info and can get a cheaper quote.

I consider it collusion and it drives me mad, but I guess they watch out for each other (Brokers and Carriers) and that’s the name of the game.

Tom Fry, who Nate referred, is one of the best in the business. His rapport with the underwriters is quite established and well rounded. Due to his good relationships he has historically been able to extract the lowest possible quote for my customers in what is a very arbitrary and subjective business (insurance). I used him almost exclusively when I worked for Piper and I referred Nate to him when he needed to get his own insurance out from underneath our dad's. I was very confident in referring Fry to a family member.

Ryan Birr at NIG I have gotten to know rather well now that I am living and selling aircraft in the pacific northwest, he handles a lot of aviation underwriting and understands rag and tube well. If you prefer keeping you business closer to home then definitely give him a call.

Now on to bigger problems, lets talk about that Champ problem of your's...

Afternoon guys...my uncle bought a PA-22/20 and called Mr. Frye & Sons and talked to Valerie like was said here,(I gave him the info after seeing it on here)....Question is, when he received his paperwork today from them it had in his policy that they were covering a PA-22. He said someone said that they do not cover tailwheel aircraft anymore. Has anyone else heard this or is this someone trying to be smarter than they are? He is calling Valerie back now to verify if he has insurance or not. Thanks,
Sonny

Sonny,

I would be a bit careful here!

The list administrator (me) owns a Chief, and the Moderator (Brian Matz) owns a Chief, so lets say that this is an Aeronca Forum and not a "Champ forum!" :)

Everyone, many of us in the Aeronca world use:

Melonie Birch
FACER INSURANCE AGENCY, INC.
P.O. Box 898
Rantoul, IL 61866
Ph: 1-800-727-2147
Fax: 1-217-892-9726

for our insurance needs on the airplane. Facer and Melonie are very easy to work with and their rates are competitive. Well worth giving her a call.

Doug,

Just looked up one of her emails and its with AIG.

Have been very happy with them but no claims either. Jody Wittmeyer on this list (and several others) use Melonie and are as well happy with the coverage and price.

I do not get a penny off of referrals, just keep a good agent in business.

Joe--

Thanks, I have my 182 with AIG through the AOPA and they have been reasonable. Will try AIG on the Champ the next time. Do you insure hull or just liability? The Chief is in non insurance status right now. Will give them a shot at the quote.

I use Aero Insurance near Milwaukee and looking at my last years premium, I see the quote was for $329 (liability only) and $514 for liability and ground coverage on the hull. I haven't carried inflight for years. That's based on $500,000/100,000 and $20,000 on the hull which is probaby a bit on the low side. I've never had a claim on either the Champ or when I had my Cherokee. About 1000 hours TT and 300 TW.

Sonny,
They are covering my Champ as we speak. In fact I just renewed my coverage for the year. What I have found is even though they work in aviation, sometimes they don't fully understand the little things; like a PA-22/20 is actually a tail dragger. I always get a kick when talking with Valerie, because she calls my Champ an Aeronica 7. Go figure.

Did you get everything staightend out?

Doug,

I have full coverage. Just cannot take the chance of losing the whole shooting match if something bad would happen, so pay the extra every year. When I retire may go with just liability but not for now.

If I remember correctly its $850 or so a year and thats after upping my value to $22-24k after the LSA ruling came out.
