Case and Crank services

I’ve been rebuilding a C-85 and had questions about cylinders, now it time for the case and other stuff. I talked with a couple different engine shops locally asking about Divco, since they did our O-300 back in ’99 with no problems. But both said to send the Case to Crankcase Services Inc. in OK. Seems that a couple guys that worked for Divco split off to start their own shop, and have made quite a name for them selves. As for the Crank, Cam and all other internal Steel, I plan on sending them to Aircraft Specialties Services for the same reasons
Any comments on either shop?

I use D&S Camshaft Corp. for cams/cam follers, no one in my area has
had problems. ECI for crankshafts, they hold an STC for 20 under on
all Cont. from A-65 thru 0-200 cranks. They come back like new, only
better...hardned. I had a problem with DivCo. I will not go back to them
although no one around here has had a problem.

That shed's some light. talking with ASS, they said if it needed 20 under, it would take 5-6 weeks to get hardened. hmmmm

guess they just ship over to ECI.
And other have had problems with Divco. Some said that it would take forever to get your case back, among other quibs.

Have heard that Divco can take a while on some parts. Good to have other options!

Recently purchased some regrind lifter bodies from Aircraft Specialy Services. They looked great except when you mike the barrels. They have a minimum that they can go to. The problems with this is that the case has some wear on it by now also. Put the two together and you have a clearance condition that is over the wear-out max in the manual. This will make for more oil leakage and a lower hot idle pressure. If the clearance is too large the lifter will tend to bind and not rotate as it should and the face will gall. Since either of these conditions suck, I sent them back and purchased their new STCd lifter bodies. They are perfect, and with the new dia the clearance comes in at around .002 . Right on the money for new fit. They are also not cheap. They also have the STC for .020 under nitrided cranks. Ron

As I said I like them (good price and workman ship), the only thing is
you have to purchase your 20u bearings from A.S.S. and they ant cheep!

Regardless of what vendor any-one chooses, check the parts for size and make sure they are within spec. If you get a case reconditioned do not assume it is perfect because it came from a certified shop. Bolt it together , torque it , and measure it. It can save a lot of work and time down the road. The last thing you want to do is overheat a nitrided crank journal from a bearing hole being too tight. It happens.
