Found it!

Thanks for everyone's help. We've found another core.

Looks like I'm gonna need to build up another engine. I loaned my Super-85 to Dad for his Cub; now I don't think I'll get it back! So if you come across a core, I'd appreciate a heads up.

Thanks!

You going to do another Dons Dream Machine conversion on it?

What are the pluses and minuses of installing a 0200 as the C85's are getting hard to find? I understand about the annual spar inspection and of course it burns more fuel, but what needs to be modified to install the 0200 in a 7BCM etc? I have a friend who has a 0200 with logs, possibly for sale. It has been sitting for years and will most likely need a rebuild or at least a good careful look. I'm thinking about it for my L16 (7BCM) mostly because it's available and I'm not that concerned about keeping the plane absolutely original. Not a big hurry as I'm a couple of years away from finishing it. In fact, it's been so cold (-20 last night) that I haven't been working in the shop to help out my propane bill. Really boring hanging around the house though.

If someone has papers for the installation of a 0200 in a Champ, I'd appreciate a copy. Understand it's a Buzz Wagner STC.

Mike,
If you use a set of the conical adapters for the 0200 case it fits in the stock location. You might need to "adjust" an oil tank support for clearance.
Nate,
I don't know whats happening with all the 85's out there. Complete core engines seem hard to come by. There are a lot of parts available but it will take forever to piece one from parts. The last one I saw was an Ebay item in Arizona. It had some damage but was complete. I think it sold for about 1k.

I let a C85-12 (w/ starter and generator) go by for $1800, no logs. I asked the guy what he wanted for it (it was for sale) and he said "make me an offer". Couldn't really decide what it was worth in my own mind so I let it go as I didn't need it at the time :? . It did look like one of those at the Oshkosh Fly Mart that had been bounced around in the back of a truck or dropped from a Champ. Anyway, I later found out he sold it for $1800. Problem with a core like that is you don't know if it had a prop strike or block is cracked or damaged internally. Also, looked at the paperwork on one in Dallas that did have logs, but had last been overhauled in 1956 and unsure of the hours since that. I think he wanted around $8500 if I remember correctly.

With the price of new cylinders today on the C85-0200's I don't think I'd even consider trying to rebuild an old one if it had much time on it. By the time you get everything back to serviceable condition by the rebuilder, you have almost the price of a new cylinder anyway. I spent over $500 having a A65 brought back up to service standards, although you don't have alot of choice in the A series engines unless you go with a new set of Superiors for around $3400.

I do see this guy in California o EBAY who advertises C-85's etc. for $6500 plus a $2000 core without mags, carb, etc. Don't know much about him and it's too far away. Having bought one 'rebuilt engine' (according to the logs  ) and then having to deal with several problems after the fact, I think I'll do my own from this time on along with my AI's blessing. The last A65 we completed that way worked out just fine.

Several years ago, I bought a C85-8 case from Divco for $1200. Also I agree with Mike about buying new cylinders verses rebuilding a cylinder. Over the last 5 years I have rebuilt 2 cylinders for my 0-540. On both occasions, I was with $100 of the price of a new one. I had to do it twice to learn but then again I am not very bright.

I know what you mean. It took me a year to piece everything together into a running engine last time.

Did that before, not again!

I guess all I really need is a full case; cam, lifters, push rods, connecting rods, and gears. Everything else will either be new (cylinders) or O-200 parts.

Nate,
Did I read a post somewhere about the cost to rebuild your 85?
Was it in the 11K range?

One thing to remember is that Nathan had several circumstances on his overhaul that were not normal. The repair shop damaged his crank, which then had to be replaced and so on, so it took longer and cost more than normal.

Every engine is different and whenever a case is opened up you just hope and pray that everything inside will be fine.

A friend of mine has a C85-12 core, minus starter and generator, for $3000. I`ll check to see if log books are available. Jim

Jim,

If the parts are serviceable then thats a descent price IMHO. A good crank is about 1/3rd of that price alone I believe.
