I understand that new regulations will go into effect soon regarding ELTs. I further understand that the new regs will make most existing ELTs obsolete in two stages. First, a relatively inexpensive upgrade this year, and a very expensive upgrade in 4 or 5 years requiring an outside antenna.javascript:emoticon('')

Does anyone have the exact info. The ELT in my Champ needs batteries this year and I don't want to pay alot if it will become obsolete later this year.

ELT DATES

My understanding is: as of 12-20-04, all ELT's that were mfg. to FAR90
are out of date. Those that were mfg. to FAR90A are OK till 2009, then
all are NG. The 121.5 freq. will no longer be used for emerg. You can
look at the DATA plate on your ELT to see what you have. Training flights
of less than 50n miles do not need one. We all need to check the new
2005 AIM for the FACTS, lest we get into trouble....me included. All above
is second hand heresay so don't take it for fact. It would be nice if we have an IA with the up to date poop!
