ELT requirements in LSP Champ

Post by hammmike »

What are the requirements for a ELT in a champ. Do you still need on for local flights in a 75 HP 7-AC? I do not have one in the champ I have purchased and the gentleman I purchased it from said I didnt need one. I think I will need to get one. Thanks Mike

LSA Aircraft and ELT's

Post by Mnflyer »

Hi Mike to my knowledge the only LSA aircraft that are exempt from ELT's are the single seat planes, another exemption is if the aircraft is used for training and always remains within 20 miles of the base airport.
Personally I think its good to have with its another tool to work in ones favor.

ELT

Post by Mnflyer »

Hi Mike they come for sale on E bay all the time, keep in mind that the 409 Mhz elt's are coming in a couple of years thus I would not spend big money on the old 121.5 / 243 units at this time, I'd buy a working used unit.
Heres a couple of e bay links you can buy a brand new Ameri-king for less than $200.00, I( have 2 of the ACK elts and like them have had no problems with them, all use standard Duracel "D" cells save big time on batteries.

Mike,

I might have an EBC-102 or the like that I do not need.

Let me dig around in the hangar and see...

Hey Joe is that one still legal to be a new install? I have one on my champ but it is not legal to re-install on another aircraft.

When does anyone know when it was installed?

I can't find the article I recently read, but the jest of it was the old ELT's are legal and will remain legal after February 2009. The drawback is no one will be looking for you on 121.5 except for random airplanes listening to 121.5. The article's recommendation is stay legal with the old style and purchase a personal 406 unit to carry with you.

Reference http://members.eaa.org/home/saarchive/e ... 025367.pdf for more info than you care to know about ELTs. You must be a member of EAA to login to see the article.

I found the article on ELT requirements. It was in an AOPA article.

I suspect you have to be an AOPA member to see it.

These older elt's TSO 91 can not be installed after:

(2) For operations other than those specified in paragraph (a)(1) of this section, there must be attached to the airplane an approved personal type or an approved automatic type emergency locator transmitter that is in operable condition, except that after June 21, 1995, an emergency locator transmitter that meets the requirements of TSO-C91 may not be used for new installations.

The EBC-102 is most likely one of these.

Hmmm, wonder if you can "replace" a missing one with a like unit?

Were I in this situation I would find a loophole and use it. Simply no way that most of us can afford $1000 for any ELT!

I have one of these units that is messed up. Luckily it worked during my recent annual and I am hoping to replace it with a like unit. Hopefully this is legal since the bracket is already in the plane.

You can still buy a unit that meets the FARs for less than $200. You don't have to buy a 406 unit to meet the requirement.

I just don't see how this fits in the mission statement of the FAA. The ELT's were installed in the 70's. I don't think the numbers add up to a great safety device. GAMA statistics show that 99% of the time the signals are false and only activate 12% of the time at accidents. Now we are asked by NOAA to install a different unit because they are shutting off the receiver. The FAA is pretty quiet about this one.
As an inspector if I find a 406Mh ELT installed, how do I test it and how do you record the test? Misuse carries a pretty large fine.
If you want one you should install one. If you don't,you shouldn't be required to install one. But don't expect anyone to come looking for you.
