A65-8 Oil Sump

Tried this on the Engine Board but I don't think anyone is awake over there!

Does anyone want to swap a short neck A65-8 oil sump for a short neck one or know where I can get a short one?

My long neck oil sump has been a pain since I bought my Champ because the oil filler cap rubs against the carb heat shroud.

Now it is really a pain because I discovered that I can't remove the RH exhaust pipe without removing the oil sump!

If I can't find a short one I'm thinking about cutting out a section and welding it back. Any thoughts on this?

Does anyone know the correct p/n for an A65-8 oil sump? I discovered that eight different p/ns are listed in the A-65 parts book with no indication of which is for Champs!!

Mine is A-5363 but the neck is just a hair too long and bumps against the carb heat muff so I assume it is the wrong one?

The p/n is stamped on the engine side of the sump flange.

I thought maybe someone might have one off or know the p/n for sure.

It is a '46 Champ with stock exhaust and muffs.

Thanks.

Continental made several different sumps for different aircraft. Short necks were found on Cessna 120/140's I think, and there was an extra long neck for Aircoupe's and more recently The CubCrafters SportCub.

Find a long neck oil sump and you won't have the clearance issue on the heat muff. Long necks were/are standard for the Champ/Chief.

Nathan,

Thanks. I found the p/n A-536 on the engine side of the flange. Unfortunately there are supposed to be four numbers, the last being either a 2 or 3, but mine is totally invisible. In the Continental parts book illustrations the p/n ending in 2 has a short tab on a long neck and mine has a long tab on a shorter neck, so my p/n has to be A-5363 if the illustrations are accurate.

Based on the Parts Book illustrations my tank has a much greater angle from the vertical than the long neck type! However, there are eight different p/ns and only two illustrations so there are a lot of unknowns here.

One of the two large bumps on my oil cap just barely touches the carb heat muff, we're talking maybe 1/16 to 1/8" here. A couple of washers under the case mounting tab and an extra flange gasket might do the trick.

I sure would like to find out the correct p/n though, that would clear up a bunch of questions in my mind.

Gus,

Bet that if you called Bill Pancake he would know!

Joe,

The problem is probably resolved. Just today I reversed the tank and if nothing unexpected pops up I'll leave it that way. I haven't installed the bottom cowl yet so I'm not sure I will have enough clearance but so far see no reason why not. There may be a problem with clearance for adding oil, but I think not.

I had to bolt a small extension onto the crankcase bracket because it was about 1.5" to the rear of the crankcase stud on the left side.

I don't know why it wasn't on the left side to begin with because the engine compartment is much less congested there. Also my top cowling hinge on the right side doesn't open without making the cowling pop so it is better off on the left side anyway.
