Take a look at my Radar image of Gustav.
I flew down to Montego Bay, Jamica (MBJ) Fri afternoon, 29th.

I was just thinking, anytime I make an announcement to passengers about the ride maybe being "a bit bumpy",
it reminds me of Doctors when they say..."this might hurt a bit"

....A BIT ???!!!????....yea right!

The decent was pretty rough, but it was about to become more interesting.
On the only ILS & single runway, at 14 DME out and 3000 ft, we were told to go into HOLDING at the 11 DME fix (Omaxi)
...3 miles to set-up, the Radar's lit-up, we're getting the crap beat out of us
and here's the fun part...we have a 54KT direct x-wind in holding,
even the flight computer was having trouble with that, after 20 min. of holding, they clear us for the approach.
At 1200 ft on the ILS (inside the marker) we had a quartering tail-wind at 28kts.
We must have asked the Tower 15 or 20 times for a wind check,
their response (if you can believe it)......"winds calm" (in their Jamican accent).
We "picked up" the lights at 100' above Minimuns.

Tower:
...we have you in sight Continental, "cleared to land, winds calm".

It wasn't pretty but we were on the ground.
The Wind Sock? ...direct x-wind, stiff as a horizonal board, my guess 25 or 30kts, who knows what it was gusting to.

I take an A330 in there - Thomas Cook/MyTravel.

You can always plan on a CB over OMAXI, that's why it's there !

Locking onto the ILS at Leeds, UK, runway 32, spot wind at 8 miles was 230/73. I was looking out of the F/O's window, his eyes were as large as dinner plates - we could see the runway by the way.

He said would we divert - I said - I will tell you at 200'..... or words to that effect.

Well, it was in limits for the Scarebus, so I strangled the penis on the windowledge and landed.

'Twas a lively day out and we earned our money.

I have a good idea, lets build a gigantic airplane that can't fit on taxi-ways, can't fit at jet-ways,
(and while it cost a "gazillion dollars" for fuel) why don't we add
a weight room/gym or work-out area, maybe a lounge or bar, restaurant, in-flight showers and whatever else ya'll can think of.
Or maybe just put 800+ seats in it, that should be fun.

LOL is without a doubt the most annoying three letters ever typed on a keyboard but, this post just made me bust out laughing........IMO one of the funniest ever posted. Please keep it coming...........Tater must be hungover from the holiday or he would have chimed in by now.

And is the 787 still quietly leaking at the factory or have they figured how to seal the plastic fuselage yet

We also hear that it too is a tad portly, delayed and may not make the initial range figures

At least on the A330, we go gross weight to FL370, stay above the weather and have a very civilised table to dine on. Mind you, old glow in the dark Joe must be used to stratospheric cruising in his tackle - we have radiation monitoring through Globalog - do you have similar ?

Mind you, years ago, when I was on the 'B' fleet, my record at MBJ was 12 overhead bins and the flightdeck door burst open on landing.......... Funnily enough, that was a similar - Ya Mon, wind calm, clear to land type of day.

Oh and we don't whine about ride reports in Blighty either

He forgets that the 380 was over a year late, does not meet its design parameters and that they had to re-design major parts of the assy to make it work.

I am cheating as a very good friend of mine is on the acceptance group for the 380 for Emirates and accepted the first one out. Major problems with the ship and its not been a real success yet.

Yes, it would be nice to have tray tables to eat off of but when I worked at Boeing we had cute flight attendents who gave us our meals on china on our very own tray, so you can have yours! No comment on the bloody side sticks either! I hate them and like the old control yoke myself but then I am an old fart and not going to change anytime to a "Scarbus" for my airplane!
