Wood Prop

Post by gusc »

My faceplate appears to be home made of plain 0.090-0.120 Al, maybe even soft Al. When I try to torque the hub bolts they don't seem to get tighter at all even with only 12lb-ft on the wrench. I chickened out and stopped.

Now it is obvious that this plate is bending when the nuts are torqued so this plate has to go.

As I remember the plate on my Stinson was at least 1/4" thick and appeared to be beveled and hardened Al. This one just looks like a big washer.

Everywhere I look on my Champ the rebuilder seemed to take the very cheapest way out. I'm getting pretty tired of this and pretty disgusted with myself for not looking closer before buying.

I figured some of you guys who changed to metal props probably have some of these plates lying around? I assume that wood and metal use different plates, but that might not be so??

Anyway, anyone have one in good shape to sell to me?

Sounds like our face plate is the wrong one. Do you have a taperd shaft engine or flange shaft. If tapered, the face plate is part of the hub assembly or should be--if tapered you have to get a face plate.

Gus,
Check with Fresno Airparts. They had the plates in stock.
The metal props don't require the face plates and the plate is steel.

Thanks to all for quick responses.I found that the plate is available from both Air Spruce and Wag-Aero for only $35. One is on the way!!

The plate I removed is 1/8'Al and crooked as can be from being torqued.

It has a taper crank.

Jim,

Thanks for the offer. If mine doesn't come for some reason I'll be contacting you. I visit my son every spring in Edmonds.

New 7EC has a wood prop and we just get the plate from Spruce. Its plated steel. We fab our own too, but its really not significantly different.

What a DIFFERENCE a metal prop makes. No comparison!

According to Sensenich, the faceplate should be as thick as the flange on the crankshaft.

Sure sounds like yours is the wrong one. Get the correct one before you damage the prop or have it come off in flight.

It sounds like you are confusing the torque plate (steel) and the moisture imprevious plate (aluminum), the moisture impervious plate is used to cover up the hub area to prevent water to enter on flange crankshaft only. The taper crankshafts never had these plates due to the hub assembly nut sticks out beyond the prop hub.

The moisture imprevious plate offically had a Continental Motors logo stamped in the center of the bolt pattern.

I got the correct steel plate from AirSpruce and all is well. Prop torqued down and tracked nicely.

My crank is tapered.
