Installing wood prop on A-65 with Flange

Can anyone give me some tips on installing a standard wood prop on an A-65 with flange? I had to go to my local A&P rather than my regular one since she lives too far away. The locals are not used to working on our kind of bird.

When following the instructions from Sensenich, ie. find TC and mounting the prop at the 10 o'clock position the result is that the prop is not in the proper position to engage while pulling it through.

Swing prop through, it should stop on the start of the compression stroke, remove prop and reposition it to the 10 o,clock position do not final torque it yet. swing it again a few times should stop at 10 each time, now final torque and give it a try.

At top dead center you are already past the 28-30 BTC

Thanks Mike. I thought that was the case and tried to tell them that. Course they were just trying to follow the instructions from Sensenich and aren't used to working on old Continentals.

I appreciate the advice. Course I will also have to deal with some other stuff since the poor plane has not been run for about 3 months with me going through the cancer treatments. We started it with the prop in the wrong position and the engine ran rough, I'm guessing a valve might be hung up from sitting. To make it even more interesting the carb float immediately stuck as well causing it to leak gas.

Hopefully we can get that all straightened out Monday. I'm sure ready to go flying again and need to take it up to Arcadia later this month to do my annual. I'm not 100% yet, but can do pretty well for about half a day or so before needing a nap.

it's been a long haul, but I'm done with the radiation treatments now and beginning to heal up.
