Prop Spacer on a 11-AC without the McDowell Starter
Prop Spacer on a 11-AC without the McDowell Starter
We are restoring a 1946 11-AC, using a Sensenich wood prop on a flanged A-65 engine. We will not be using the McDowell starter. The Aeronca manual calls for a spacer, PN 2-1017, but we can't find one. Univair does not stock it. Does anyone know where I might find one?

Looks like Todd has the drawing on Aeronca.com... but it's in bad enough shape to need some prep and clean up work. I probably need one too for my Chief, since the spinner is contacting the cowling by about an 1/8".
I had a spacer in the box of parts which was almost a 1/2" thick, but the part was really corroded.

One other thing: it seems the 'new' engine mount rubbers that are presently available seem to 'squish' down a lot more than the original mounts. The part number escapes me and I'm not in the shop right now, but I went through this with Wag Aero a few years ago and they assured me the composition was the same. However, after they've been in service for a short time they all seem to crack and wallow out. If you take them off, they don't look half bad so I can't explain it but I'm quite sure you lose at least 1/4" from the original mounts which, of course, brings the spinner and prop back closer to the nose bowl and this is being properly torqued to specs.
It appears it's common no matter which supplier you get them from unless you happen to get some 'old stock' mounts.
