Attached are a couple of pics of the new 3-997 fuel tank access plate
that is used by the Sedan.
I have sold 2 of these to a fellow that had none to install a set of our
metal replacement fuel tanks in his Sedan.
These are machined out of 1/2" X 6" aluminum plate. The holes are
drilled first and then threaded; the plate is turned over and then the
large diameter hole is cut and then threaded with a thread mill. The
rest is plunge cut and machined in one operation.
The ends of the integrated "nuts" are machined off to reduce weight
further.
The plate starts out weighing 2 lbs, 13 oz.; the finished plate without
the stainless steel filler neck installed weighs just 7.0 oz. The filler
neck threads and bore are coated with a 3M fuel tank sealer and screwed
together, cleaned up and allowed to set 24 hrs.
The finished weight is 9.6 oz compared to 9.2 oz for an original plate.
Not bad I'd say. The new plates sell for $375.00 each.
