They will be in the middle of WTI(Weapons Training Institute). This will start appx 12 noon.
If flying in later than noon, be advised that they may want you to divert to Somerton Airport 54AZ until later or even the next day. (3 miles SW of MCAS Yuma under class "D" airspace) Unicom 123.00 928-722-5724 or 928-580-6877

Wow, that sounds like a great trip in a Sedan: From Homer to Yuma, all along the coast to Catalina, then over to Yuma. And then northbound over all the fantastic National Parks!
So, the City of Yuma, N1387H, N1266H.... at least three Sedans, that is enough of a reason to take the trip from Switzerland!
Would really be nice, if N1054F was ready and could attend, too, by then.
Thanks for the good news, Joe!

I just received the below, sad message from Paul Rachels.
Now that would be a real bummer and a pity for all the work that this motivated team has already invested into the project! Maybe the Aeronca community can help out? If I can do anything from my home base in Switzerland, I will be glad to. Anyway, good luck to Paul and get back safely, again! Thanks for having kept us up to date so quickly. And let's hope, the person who headed the project will get well, again, soon! Matt
The Endurance Days flyin might be a thing of the past. I'm headed to
Afghanistan for a few ? months. The person behind it has taken ill also and
a local restaurant owner( Yvonne Peach-Yuma Landing Restaurant) is still
trying to make it work. Contact for what's left of the flyin is as

Well all, just received a "not so good email" from the new gent in charge of the fly-in.

Joe:
had a phone call from the guys in Alaska last week. I told them the
Oct. 24-25 flyin portion sponsored by EAA Chapter 590 was still a go. I wish Paul had not sent that message and I hope you can spread the word that nothing has changed regarding that event.
The events the city had planned for the 6 week period leading up to the 24th are a little up in the air but the local EAA chapter had nothing to do with those events anyway.
In addition to the pancake breakfast and the static display of the "City of
Yuma" aircraft, there will be a lot of military aircraft involved in the
semi-annual Weapons and Tactics Course (WTI) held at Marine Corps Air
Station (Yuma International Airport) so there should be Ospreys as well as
the normal contingent of F-16. F-18, Harriers, and various support aircraft.
We are looking forward to the event and hope you can attend. I understand notice and information regarding the flyin are posted on the Aeronca site.
If you can correct any misinformation posted there I would much appreciate it.

I have to say that this is a pretty big surprise on this end. We have several Aeronca people who have taken vacation time off and booked airline tickets to attend, but were told in December that the dates were on the 9-11th of October, NOT the 24-25th. Telling everyone at this late of a date is not a good thing. The people from Switzerland and the UK who have already booked things now have to change or cancel everything.
Also I was coming to attend a "celebration of the endurance flight in the Aeronca Sedan," and not see a bunch of F-16's and F-18's. Am interested in the antique airplanes and not a bunch of military stuff (unless they let me fly!
) so not sure how this is going to turn out.
My flight department has a flight scheduled for this time period so its not looking good for my attending, and I have the only flying Sedan in the state. Might get someone from SoCal or Nevada.
Not sure how this is going to work out...

Oh wow!
I really hope, this is a bad joke or that Albert has mixed up the dates for some reason, because our flight back to Switzerland will depart on October 12 and by the 24th, Monika and I will long be back at work! Anyway, it looks, like this is not going to be much of an Aeronca Fly-In, after all. Really sad, since it was an Aeronca that this celebration hassle is all about, wasn't it?!

Have to apologise to everyone. Albert sent me the below email over a month ago and I have been simply too busy to get to it.
As it appears the fly-in held in Yuma IS still on for the 10th/11th of October.

Joe, when I composed this message, I was not very clear on the dates and I hope I have not confused the issue too badly.
Oct. 10th-11th (Sat & Sun): The EAA Chapter Flyin and Pancake Breakfast is Oct. 10th (Sat) and 11th (Sun). It will be held at the Lux-Air FBO at Yuma (KNYL) where there is room to park about 60 aircraft. Those who wish to camp can fly to Somerton Airport (K54AZ) about 4 miles SW. The EAA Chapter will provide a shuttle service so that those who camp there can get to the pancake breakfast and also other places in Yuma as required. The City of Yuma Aeronca will be on static display downtown. It is fortunate that Oct. 10th was on a Sat. in 1949 and also on a Sat. here in 2009.
Oct. 17th (Sat): There is a dinner scheduled and some other events
pertaining to the historic flight.
Oct. 24th (Sat): This will be the final event scheduled (as of now, at
least), which is a dedication of the Fowler statue at Yuma Crossing.
When I cut and pasted material from another email I can see I really screwed up and changed the flyin date. I'm sorry about that because it has always been the 10th.
Some of our problems have come from a change at the city level-a different person is now coordinating those events but in talking to J Gillaspie (co-author of the book "The Longest Flight") he assures me that city is getting their planning back on track. We are trying to arrange for a
continuous showing of the Arizona PBS segment about the City of Yuma flight also.
I hope I have not caused anyone to change their plans as we are hoping to see as many Aeronca pilots, planes, and guests as possible.

More info from Albert:

Joe:
There was a planning meeting about Yuma Endurance Days last Tuesday. The City of Yuma Aeronca will be on display at the FBO Saturday (Oct. 10th) during the EAA pancake breakfast and then moved downtown for the rest of the day. There will also be an afternoon/evening dinner. The manager of the Best Western Coronado Inn has offered to comp some rooms for Aeronca pilots maybe as many as 6 and we are looking for sponsers to offset gas for Aeronca pilots. We hope to see you there.
Albert
And:
One other thing Joe, the city has deceided to put all it's effort into the Oct. 10th affair instead of spreading it out over the next two weekends also. That makes more sense to me since the flight landed on 10-10. Also, the authors of The Longest Flight have a second edition about to go into print. They hope to have it printed by the 10-10 date and it covers the 50th anniversary as well as the next 10 years.
Albert

Sounds like everything is a go for this, so please lets see how many Aeronca's we can get to attend this! I will be flying my Sedan in for this.
