Southern Style Aeronca Flyin June 12-14, 2009

Post by Nathan K. Hammond »

For the last year, we've batted around the idea of having a Southern Aeronca Flyin, and plans are finally in motion. So here it is....

June 12th-14th 2009
Peachstate Aerodrome

Mark your calendars, and tell the boss the shove it.
Plans are still loose, but once we've got them firmed up, I'll pass along the details.

Actually, the first business is to name the darn thing.... any ideas?

Okay gang here ya go....
This is the first Southern Style Aeronca Fly-In but it’s shaping up to be a good one. It’s setup to be an easy going weekend, for everybody to come hang out and have a great time. There is no official schedule, except for BBQ and Margarita’s at my house Saturday evening (50yds from the airport). Some things to know…..

Location: Peachstate Aerodrome (GA2)
2400x100 Turf marked with cones and tires, Runway’s 13-31 with a slight dip in the middle. RW31 has a displaced threshold for (use full length at your discretion and with caution; you can’t see the other end except from the displaced threshold on.) The runway has a bit of washboard to it in the middle that can get a little rough.

Registration Fee:
Yep, there sure is. Until I win the lotto, you guys will have to help me out.
$30 per person; that helps cover the Saturday Evening BBQ and all the extra stuff like port-a-crappers.

What to Bring:
Tie-Down’s
Sunscreen
Camera
A folding Chair can come in handy
A great Attitude and stories to tell

Fuel:
Is located on the field. Last I saw, fuel was $3.40/gal but that can change between now and then. Other options are; Griffin (6A2) 5 miles East; Thomaston (OPN) 15miles South; and Tara (4A7) 10miles North.

Food:
There is a restraunt located on site; www.barnstormersgrill.com You are on your own for the weekend EXCEPT for the Saturday Evening BBQ and Margarita’s. I will have a cooler stashed by the registration tent with some water in it through the weekend. I’ll try to have them open up early on Sunday for breakfast, or get the local EAA to do up coffee, pancakes sausage etc…
Saturday Evening 6pm – BBQ and Margarita’s and all the other good Southern Humidity you can stand will be at my house; 50 yards from the airport.

Shelter:
Good ‘Ol fashion camping. I’ve also got a shower at my house (50yrds from the airport) for those that want one. For the likes of David Johnson and other discernable characters, I have a hose out back to make you feel at home. But if that’s not your thing… several hotels are located about 6 miles away in Griffin.

Best Western
Howard Johnson Inn
Comfort Inn
Days Inn
Super 8

Transportation:
We are working on getting a loaner van/bus from the Church to shuttle folks to and from the hotels and airport. If this falls through; we’ve got enough vehicles to cover.
But if you are Maverick and like to go solo…
Economy Rent-A-Car 770-227-5966
Enterprise Rent-A-Car 770-223-2830

Things to Do:
If you’re interested in touring the local area; Peachstree City, FFC is 15 miles away and home to Aircraft Spruce and Specialty; Atlanta Motor Speedway is about 10 miles to the North, (Mark Lamon will be happy to take you airplane around the track...) For a pleasant flight and sight seeing; river-run the Flint River into the Pine Mountains. It’s about an hour round-trip more or less. If you ever wanted to fly a Stearman, J-3 or need a BFR, Tim Preston is the resident CFI and can set you up. www.flytailwheel.com/Index.htm

Here you see the general layout of the airport. We'll try to fill up the parking on the far right of the picture first, since it's the smoothest. And the RED arrows show the general taxi routes.

Isn't Nate the guy who flew the P#####J-# to the Aeronca convention? (Wish I could make it down there, though :( )

I did see some incriminating photos being sent around with Nate and a certain “off brand” yeller plane. I am hoping it was just a phase he was going through.

Please tell me it isn't true...............Nate flew a P#####J-# to the hollowed Aeronca grounds!! Can't be true..........I was just starting to like this guy.........Nate is of the people for the people and won't give me the wheel pants off the beer can Champ......say it isn't true.... Please!!

It's a trap.......he's going to trick us Aeronca guys into coming to the "Red neck fly in" at Peachstate then toilet paper or planes or even worse when we bend over to auger in our tailwheel tie downs.......

Yeah, he's coordinating an Aeronca Fly-In to pay penitence and make amends.... (Bet he'll have that off-brand yeller plane at Peachstate too).

And then he tried to park it in the Aeronca parking area (we were helping him actually) until Jim made him move it!

Someone needs to bring a golf cart so Nate can do a fly-by in the Keystone Light Champ. Image

Hey Nathan, probably want to have the Champ finished by next summer...or securely stored some place...seems to be a fairly hostile group towards those who dabble with the "other side". They may get bored just taking pictures of the derelict fusalage with beer cans! Might make a cool wind direction indicator if mounted on a pole!
