I am thinking of becoming one and would like some info.

I'm sure he will help you in any way he can. I'm going to spend a couple days with him early next month to upgrade from SP to PP. Since I don't have a plane right now, and I'm sure I'll be going nuts until I deploy, being a PP will give me more flying opportunities.

I'm a regular CFII who has been doing nothing beyond sport pilot instruction since late 2004, when the SP rule came into effect. I no longer have a medical, but I keep renewing my CFII so I can still instruct SP as the PIC.

What do you want to know?

Can I get all the instruction I need from my personal CFI? Does he need to know anything special about the Sport pilot rules? How long will it take to get my SP CFI? Just a written test and check ride or do I have to put in so many hrs with a CFI?

Good luck, we need more SP-CFIs.

When I took my flight training for Sport Pilot I had to go the ultralight instructor route at first and then switch to a tailwheel CFI and coach him about the SP rules myself.

Ultimately my former ultralight instructor got his SP-CFI and has been kept busy.

Amen to that.

Hey got to go flying today with James Gevay. He flew down here in the company Citation and let me know he was coming. So we went up for a couple of hours in the Champ so he could see it low and slow.

Great fun and a really nice guy.
