Tandem Trainers

Post by Paul Agaliotis »

Does anyone have information on the N numbers for the Tandems, specifically any relation to the serial numbers. I have sn# C5720T and the FAA has reissued it's N number. The records for the N number (N7732C) don't have any historical information. I'm afraid if I order the CD it will be for the current aircraft.
The N number that was assigned doesn't look correct for the vintage. If possible I would like to acquire the correct N number for this serial number.

Might talk with Tom Holmes about this. He did a lot of research when restoring his.

Just for a follow-up,
I emailed John Houser on this subject and he had no information on serial number to N number assignment.
I was able to find that this serial number was first issued to NC31494. Since this N number is assigned I reserved and assigned another number as close to the original as I could. Another 65TC is alive and well, waiting its turn for rebuild as NC31496.

I have managed to straighten out the paperwork on these 65TC's. So now I'm on the prowl for any parts and pieces that may be available. If anyone runs across some parts and don't want them keep me in mind.

John is sickly the last I heard and only contact is through his daughter. Hope he is getting better but if you write him it might be a while until you get a reply.

Paul,
did you try ordering the CD just using the ser no? The FAA has the records of N no + Ser no on hand. At least the lady that I talked to (1999) was able to track thru the N no changes by using the ser no.

Tom,
I was able to get the correct CD by using the N number abd type. The N number had been issued about 3 times. I couldn't get the original number back but I got one 2 numbers off. So the two aircraft now are N31496 and N31499. Now all I need to do is find the rest of the parts. Or make that swap deal for the LC, that I would look pretty good in.
Thanks for all of your help Tom.

Paul,
I have the drawing no's of all the drawings I used to restore the TC65 as an excel file. I don't have the drawings themselves any longer tho'. No parts either.
Somewhere I also have the cross reference for parts interchangeability for prewars.

Tom,

Where did you get the drawings? John Houser? If John was the source then we at the NAA have copies of them (and prolly better than John had as we have scanned them using better commercial grade scanners) in house. If elsewhere then we might need to get ahold of who you sold the airplane to and see if we can get the drawings back to scan them for everyone.

Yes, I got them from John back in the '90s. The guy I sold it to has moved off this mortal coil, and I believe the airplane is now in Placerville. I don't know that for a fact tho' and I don't know if the drawings are still with it.

At least we know that we have copies of the drawings. Can always make duplicates now.

It is a little tricky since lots of the pieces were common amongst several of the pre wars, and the TA/L3 series, and some just no longer exist.
