If that great airplane was mine, I would paint it yellow as he has, top of cowling flat black, air force insignia on side (army air corp type), oversize tires, AND metallic silver spats like a Stearman. This goes under heading of unasked for advice. JC
JC, If I'm the MikeB. you're talking about, you pretty well descibed it. The upper cowl will be flat black and I just got a catalog from Aero Graphic to order the Air Force Insignia (post war for a L16). I've already painted the oleo covers yellow so I guess silver is out. I served in the Air Force during the late 50's/early 60 and I seem to remember yellow was the color of choice for at least some of the planes. Thus, the reason for the yellow rather than the authentic silver color. I'm thinking about painting "Kinross AFB" on it somewhere as that's the last place I served before shipping out to the DEW line in Alaska (lovely place with a woman behind every tree....wasn't a tree on the whole island)
Anyway,I'm afraid mine will lack the detail and perfection that Lloyd's (for example) has. I stepped into a partically started job and wound up redoing a lot of work that had been previously done. This was a basket case with a lot of cobbling involved. Not to mention all the parts that were missing or damaged that I didn't manage to find until later. Right now I'm trying to sort out the windows and green house. Luckily, a lot of members have shared pictures with me which helps. The only other L16 in this area is being restored by a friend of mine and that has Citabria windows and a headliner with no green house at all. When I redid my present Champ I had a couple of others on the field to look at when questons arose.
I'll keep posting pictures as I progress along. Right now I have brutal driving schedule which tends to slow me down but I need the $$$ to pay for my 'bad habit'. I was hoping to fully retire at age 60 but at nearly 70 I'm still at it for some reason.
