oil pressure line replacement
oil pressure line replacement
I am not quite comfortable with the oil pressure line on my engine (65Hp). There is a brass fitting screwed into the engine, then a 2'' rubber hose that is used to transition to the regular brass pressure line, this is held in place by hose clamps.
Can anyone tell me the proper fix for the oil pressure line.

Hugh,
Crude as it seems, that's pretty way they came from the factory at least on those I've looked at. The only difference between yours and mine is that I have a short bent piece of copper tubing coming off the fitting on the engine and a hose connected the two. I suppose the hose allows for some flexing. The clamps are aircraft clamps rather than the automotive screw clamps, although either would work. It's not a bad idea to fill the fitting on engine with solder and drill a small hole to restrict the oil flow should the hose or line break out board of the exit point. Wag-Aero also sells a restricted fitting. I have one but never put it on yet
as I don't think I can swing the angled fitting on the block.
I do watch the hose and clamps pretty carefully to make sure everything stays in place. In fact, I marked both ends of the tubing as a 'check point'.

Hugh,
I use a -4 AN steel fitting and tap the line end for a 10/32 set screw with an orifice drilled into it. Lock-tite it in place. Lycoming makes a fitting but it cost a bit. I stay away from the smaller sizes as the costs are higher and not many people carry anything smaller than -4.

Have some engine shop make up some oil line just like your fuel line with AN fittings. If I remember correctly, the fitting on the engine is a steel elbow with the restricter hole. I have a 45 degree elbow on the firewall end, and the oil line is in between and it follows the engine mount and is partly out of the way. Have it done just like the fuel line, it's safe and secure, and you'll never worry about it.

Big brother Clay had the copper oil pressure line break on him two different times. Oil dumped into the cockpit on takeoff and made a REAL mess the first time; the second, it broke inside the cowl and created a good little smoke trail as he flew over. In both cases, there was only a copper line with a loop bent in it, but it still cracked behind the nut on the restrictor.
Now day's we replace any copper line in the cowl with a soft hose and flare fittings just like James' picture.
