Also Burl advises me that he has added so many new Sedan parts that they have now added 4 additional pages to their catalog. If you need anything Sedan related its time to take a look at his website again. http://www.burlac.com/
Joe,
I actually thought about a Sedan before I bought the Birddog. I don't need another airplane, and I'm out of hangar space. My Birddog is about the only plane I'm still flying. Our Smith Kit Supercub has 134 hours on it total time, and I don't fly it much anymore, but the L-19 is so much more comfortable, and has similar performance. My #1 son has taken the 182 up to NC, to our hangar up there. He flies it much more than me.
I am in the final process of welding some of the little details that needed to be addressed; that's why no paint yet--it isn't done.
Next step is to finalize the gas spring installation on the seaplane doors and get the geometry figured out. Actually did that this weekend but ran into a problem with the hinge attachment to the top of the doors; it needs to be stronger than what I originally used. I don't believe it will last over time. I am designing it to be replaceable in the field with minimum effort should the case arise. Also just plain good from a maintenance standpoint.
Only one more jig to make now that we got the cables in so the pulley angles and location can be duplicated for the extended baggage. The pulleys there are moved aft to the next cross tube station and the cable angles change.
I had a wild idea for a tool to form the aluminum Cub stringers. It took me a week and half to figure out what to do and how to do it but it has paid off well. The shape that you see in the top stringers is the shape that they hold when you remove them. They are formed that way. There is minimal pressure or tension on the airframe attachments.
This week I will have the last of the little piddly things done and will send the fuselage out for sandblast and then over for painting. Then back here to do the final install of the stringers, floorboards, etc. Only one thing that would put this schedule off is if the tubes for right side brake installation arrive in time. Hopefully this week. When we add this to the data as a kit but this raises another problem; (no free lunch here) I will have to have rudder pedals made to match the originals on the pilot's side. Will be looking into that this week, too. (Anyone else interested?)
This is as far as we are taking this fuselage. The owner will cover it himself or have it done at his location.
Now that we have the first one done with most of the modifications on it I can get some good measurements and collect data to make fixtures to duplicate these changes. These will all be added to the Sedan data and not as STCs as in the past. They will come out as Service Bulletins with drawings, instructions, etc and be logbook entry only and weight and balance recalculation as necessary.
Will send more later as we go.
Blue Skies and a good tailwind to you all!
Burl
When all else fails, go to the source. Factory Approved parts and data will get you back in the air.
