compass installation and panel angle

OK, I have a question....I'm getting ready to put a new panel in the Champ, and I need to plan on installing the compass. The actual compass is the smaller type, with the 2 1/4" face size. But MY compass is installed in a 3 1/8" hole with a spacer. The compass is also installed in a "cave" with the angle spacer that puts it at a vertical angle in flight instead of the slanted angle of the panel. Will the compass work right if I install it in the actual panel, in a 2 1/4" hole, without the spacer/angle thing?

I know that this is a silly question, but I need to know before I start cutting holes, and I need to come up with a new angle spacer if I need it, because my old one is plastic and cracked.

It needs to be level in flight.

Even then it will bounce around so much that all you can do is take an average!!

Terry,
You will need to install the angle bracket. The compass will drag if it is installed directly to the panel.

That's kind of what I thought....now where do I find the bracket? I know that A/C Spruce has one (I think), but are there any other sources?

Terry,
I just used a wedge behind the panel held in place by the screws for the compass. I believe it was 7/16" at the bottom.

Don Jones bought one at the Fly Market in OSH. Believe he is going to have it copied, but don't have a timeline
