I just received a tax bill for Gail's Champ from the county. The bill is for $186.58. We live in South Carolina.
What are you guys paying in different states?

I've not seen the first bill, but I'm expecting $150/yr when the airplane is finished. My RV is about $300/yr and it is seriously undervalued on its appraisal.

I have not paid anything, just a few $$ for state registration, for which I get a map one year and airport directory the other.

Once every 4-6 years someone asks for a tax but do not answer the letter and few due.

Mike,

Not to sound harsh but I noticed that those "left coast" states seem to have a tax for everything. When I lived over there I was fortunate enough to own property elswhere and always kept my planes registered in the more tax-less convienient states. I have had my 172 for 23 years and just got my first tax/registraion bill since I bought it (correction...AZ required a $5.00 use registration when I lived there) I told them I have owned it for 23 years and they responding saying I only owed a $25/year registration fee. This will change next year and it will be $25-one time fee never due again unless I sell it. My Champ is also old enough to be in the "vintage" catagory and only required the one time $25 registration. They also wanted to collect a sales tax on it but I told them that I have also had it for several years and was only transfering in from Hawaii.
I guess all those years of my wife's military service helped in a small way.

Keith,
You are correct. South Carolina does have a very aggresive tax collection system. I bet they are going to hammer me on the Birddog (I haven't gotten a tax bill on that one yet).

Mike,

Register the plane with a private trust (costs about $1000) and you can base the trust where-ever you wish.

 In North Carolina there is a form you fill out for antique airplanes and submit to the tax office. The value is capped at 5k so I pay $55 a year for my 7DC

In Wisconsin, no personal property taxes (it must have been one they missed) on the plane. I had a one time 'vintage' Wisconsin registration fee of $75, but that was it....so far. I do pay personal property taxes on my hangar (valuation of $12,000) of about $160 per year and an airport assessment fee of about $150 per year which includes flying club membership and electricity. The flying club owns the airport property and leases space back to members. It seems to work pretty well.

In Washington State, we pay a $65. fee per year. If the a/c is not airworthy, then we pay nothing.
Up to a few years ago, we had to pay another fee for having a pilots license. That was dropped after so many complaints to the state; when they tried to collect the fees. Instead the fuel tax was increased .02.

I'm in California and in San Benito County, we pay 1% of the plane's value according to the county, which is $140. People also pay possessary (sp) interest tax on the Hollister City airport hanger rentals which is about $260/yr in my case. I don't pay any personal property tax on the non-flying aircraft. If I show the plane 12 days a year and properly document the activity, then the personal property tax is waived.

Even more amazing is that someone thinks you should pay a tax (or fee, same thing) for having a pilot's license. Boy, would that ever open up a 'pandora's box'. Let's see .... is a instrument fee higher than a private? How about a commercial? Or a air transport? Where do they quit? I have a commercial license for coaches, school bus, 18 wheeler, etc. Think you much fun they could have with that. Where would it all end?

It will end when the politicians run out of people to tax! We are quickly approaching that point today. The top 5% pay 60% of the taxes. The top 50% pay 97% of the taxes. Another way to look at this is that we are on the verge of 50/50. That is people PAYING verses people TAKING. The problem is that the people who take get to vote for the people who will give them more, and take more from those who pay. Once more people are on the take end, the country is over. And any government health care would DRAMATICALLY put more people on the take end!

A quote from Margret Thatcher: "The problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other peoples money."

Agree and while its not needed to turn this into a political thread, we need to "vote ALL of the bastards out of office" and start over again. As well term limits so that people do not end up staying in public office all of their lives.

Less not more govt and keep your nose out of my business. The way it was in 1920-1930 (except for the depression) was a pretty good life. Lets return to that way of things.
