Glove Box

Post by radiotek »

I'm a newbie and recently became the owner of a '46 Chief 11AC and will probably have a lot of questions for you all but the first is about a glovebox. My plane does not have one but instead has a blank piece of sheet aluminum covering the entire botton of the panel. In looking and feeling behind though the actual panel appears to have an opening on each side flanged inward on the sides. Didn't measure it but it seems like it might be the standard 61/2 inch like a radio rack but I assume it was for a glovebox. Did the chiefs come with a glovebox or were they optional? And are there any aftermarket glovebox assemblies and doors available? Thanks!

First off, welcome to the group!

Second a name would be nice, and would put your location (at least the state) where you are as there may be some other Aeronca owners closeby who could help.

Now for your glovebox question. They were made out of a type of paperboard, much like gloveboxes on cars in that era. The width is a good question but believe you are on the right track. There was one on each side of the airplane along with an ashtray as well.

There is a better way to show you.

This is a 11CC (or AC/BC with the newer toe style rudder pedals) but this is the original factory configuration with the exception of the two small switches on the lower panel. Also with the exception of the Aeronca Scout (a late model "bare bones" Chief) the dash all had this "Zebra" pattern on it. You can see both glove boxes then the ash trays inside of each one. They are hinged at the bottom.

As for your question on the glovebox doors, they are getting pretty rare as many people removed them to install a radio and just tossed them out. I would keep and eye on Ebay and Barnstormers for these.

Hope this helps and any questions pls feel free to ask. I restored my first Chief 29 years ago before we had the internet to help and I know what you are going through.
