Annual and Maintenance Costs
I would appreciate feedback on the expected costs for a '47 Chief's annual inspection and eventual budget needed for a major overhaul of a C-65 powerplant. Does the C-65 overhaul normally occur around 2k hours? Thanks, George

When I licence a light plane like the Chief, it generally runs under $500 for the first annual and about half that in the following years.
The difference is the research needed on the first look. After that the inspection and follow-ups need less time to complete. Unless there are new AD's to comply with. Remember this is an inspection, not a maintenance opportunity.
The A65 will cost about $5-6000 to overhaul, if you do the work yourself. If not add about $2000.
If you can control oil presures and temps the engine is in good shape and not worn out. Continental says overhaul should occur at 2000hrs or 12 years.

It also varies if the owner/pilot does any or most of the maintenance. I am an A&P so I do a 100 hour, then the IA comes along and checks what I did, does his inspection, then signs off the annual. As Paul mentioned, the first year is the most difficult, then after that you know the plane and its a lot easier.
His prices for the annual are reasonable. It can be higher if you hand the keys to the mechanic, or lower if you stay there and help. Frankly I would prefer to have the owner stay and help as they learn more about the airplane and are there should we find an issue.

Joe, Thanks. I sent Duane an email. The problem is that the owner cannot find anyone to perform the annual within the next few weeks, and the annual is out on 10-31. I can get a ferry permit but still need an inspector to sign an airworthiness certificate. I greatly appreciate your assistance. This will be my first Chief and I am looking forward to it. It may take some time but, strike up conversations with ANY pilot you see and ask who does their annuals. You will find most pilots are pretty good people other than the occasional "doctor/lawyer" ....I am GOD types that have their nose so high in the air they would drown if it started to rain.
Now this is an analogy guys.....I know some good Dr.s and well....lawyers....hmmm, let me think a bit on that one.
What I am getting at is there is generally someone at the airport or in the area that doesn't advertise the fact he will do annuals but does them "on the side" for extra money. Lots of these guys can be younger guys that have a desire to fly and will even exchange sign offs for flight time. Lots of different variables out there. Owning a plane/planes is like anything else, there are trade-offs somewhere in life to be able to partake in the joys of flight.
Anyways, when talking with these guys ask them who they use. I have always found an AI someplace that will do owner-assist annuals that save me considerable money. The guy I have doing them now even drives nearly a 100 miles right to my property to do the annual. My strip/property is 30 miles from the nearest airport. He charges me less than $150 and that is including paying his travel. As Joe stated.....if you are even slightly mechanically inclined, try to do an owner assist annual. You will learn a lot about your plane, they actually are very simple and old technology.

Keith, Thank you for the advice. I am certainly capable and interested in assisting in the annual. This is my first AC so it is all new to me. I went over 30 yrs. without flying. This is a great community and one of the reasons that I am acquiring a Chief. Everyone is so gracious and willing to share their experiences. Stay warm in the cold north.
