Spreader Bars on the Edo 1400's

I bought a set of Edo 1400's for my 'Champ-in-Progress'. I don't see any wooden plugs in the ends of the spreader bars. Should there be? And if so, how far in do they go? And finally, what type of wood?
I don't like the idea of water being trapped inside. So, why the plugs?

And once again... ANY OLD 5 GAL WING TANKS OUT THERE FOR ME TO REVERSE ENGINEER???
