Joe,
Saw one on Ebay last night. It might still be there now. Will check and get back with the item number if it is still on.

Jeff & Joe, Much thanks for helping me out with this. Do either of you have a feeling for what would be a reasonable amount to bid on an assy/case? George

George,
The only thing about these two cases is that they are not yellow tagged. I would call someone like Divco or Aircraft Specialty Services and ask what they get for cases that are already yellow tagged. With this information, you will know what it will cost to get one outright and adjust your bidding accordingly.

You could ask the seller about a refund if the case will not pass inspection or for detailed photos of the oil pump area. I may be wrong but from what I have been told, this is the main spot for trouble. Grooves in this area will cause leaks. Some can be repaired, but the repair can cost as much as one that is already recondition.

Others please chime in if I am wrong.........

Good luck,
Jeff

P.S. I got a quote for a C85-12 case for about 425 with a yellow tag. I would think the 65 would be a lot cheaper.

Chef Jeff's reasoning sounds good to me.
Add C.S.I. (Crankcase Services Incorp.) to the list.

Jeff (and Nathan), Thanks for the detailed information. I need this level of direction since I admittedly don't know much about securing aviation parts. Jeff, where are you located in Alabama? Best, George

I'm just south of Bham by about 30 miles. There was a guy at Middletown '08 from the Knoxville area. I can't remember his name right off but he was restoring a Champ. He is based on the river at Skyharbor if I remember correctly. Beautiful area up in northeast TN for some champ flying.

I've had accessory cases repaired by Bolduc in the Twin Cites (Blaine Airport). There isn't much they can do if the oil pump gear area is scratched beyond repair but they can repair (bush) the oil pump shaft bore. Not cheap and something in the $400 range (?) but it does work. The problem is the driven gear is not supported on the end and eventually things wear out after thousands of hours. You can put up with a certain amount of 'scratching' though although it's subjective in the eye of the beholder. I think gears and end plates are still available, if needed. Those I've had done seemed to work anyway.
