the stretching of metal comes about when the elastic properties have been exceeded.
It doesn't take much stretch to create a big problem that requires shrinking.
Your assignment:
Acquire a strip of metal 1" wide, 12" long.
lay it on a flat surface. (table)
at one end, clamp a stop to the table.
At the other end clamp another stop to the table.
With the metal firmly situated between the stops, remove it.
Now comes the fun part.
Re-install the metal between the stops, without moving the stops,
This time with the thickness of a razorblade, (using a razorblade) between the metal
and one stop.
Note the deflection. and report back.

Yep you can shrink it, but my point as that it takes very little stretch to create a large deformation.

You are right about that, I've seen a lot of people (even myself) get back into a corner with stretching metal.
